Dolomite Pillars and Statues

According to the agreement between the Mauritian Institute and the Tallinn City Museum, an outstanding selection of the Museum's historical ashlar collection is exposed in the clausure of the Tallinn Dominican Monastery.

In Tallinn, there is a long tradition of ashlar masonry, beginning in the 13th century and lasting until the local slate fell largely out of the architectural use in the 18th century. Throughout the centuries, Estonian dolomite has been used to represent different styles in beautiful and manifold objects of art, from the tablets bearing the family coats-of-arms to the window pillars and sundials, adorned with picturesque ornaments.
